Future-proofed Connectivity for Smart Surveillance

DOWNLOAD AS PDF

The Background

Smart surveillance, also known as smart security, is an area of IoT wherein companies utilize sensor, networking, cloud computing and data processing technology to craft advanced surveillance solutions designed to help businesses overcome growing obstacles such as theft and employee safety. In the United States alone, retailers reported over $112 billion in losses, up 1.4 percent from the previous year. With the bulk of that loss coming from organized shoplifting and other theft, some retail giants have opted to close their doors entirely to offset losses.

IoT surveillance solutions not only enhance traditional security functions by providing features like advanced facial recognition, they can also integrate into other software and devices to deliver instant, date-driven insights into daily operations. Those insights can then be used to mitigate loss and optimize overall business operations in multiple verticals such as retail, hospitality, and finance.

Smart surveillance is crucial for businesses looking to prevent theft and increase security for their employees and customers. Remote sensors embedded inside IoT security cameras are used to instantly identify intruders or suspicious individuals and automatically send alerts to business owners. They can even restrict access to certain areas, preventing dangerous robberies. Those same cameras can also sense smoke before it reaches a smoke detector and alert local EMS. On the retail side, cloud video surveillance can integrate with Point of Sale (POS) systems to track the entire customer journey, from entry to checkout, helping businesses optimize customer service and maximize sales opportunities.

The Challenge

The challenge in orchestrating smart surveillance is reliable connectivity. IoT video surveillance, for instance, relies on both primary and failover connectivity to enable features such as smart capture and AI facial recognition. Without reliable connectivity, data collected by those features cannot be transmitted to the end user for the purpose of theft prevention or customer service optimization. To make their solutions viable for users, smart security companies had to ensure their IoT software and devices remained connected at all times so vital data could be remotely collected, transmitted, and ultimately utilized by the end user. Delivering the wireless connectivity needed to fuel IoT-enabled smart security and surveillance required a solution that is both secure and scalable, so the various parts of the system are able to communicate with one another effectively.
